KOBIL was founded in Germany in 1986, before the internet was public, before smartphones existed, before “digital identity” was a category anyone had named.

The founding conviction was simple: as organizations move their critical operations into digital environments, identity and security cannot be afterthoughts. They have to be the foundation.

  1. Ismet Koyun founds KOBIL GmbH with an initial focus on PC and data security.

  2. KOBIL starts developing chip card terminals and begins offering a range of class 1-3 readers. The company successfully sells its own developments:

    • Double Power Supply Unit
    • VESA Local Bus
    • Secure PCs

    Deutsche Telekom introduces KOBIL B1 smart card terminals at every workstation.

  3. KOBIL develops and introduces two new authentication and PKI solutions:

    • KOBIL SecOVID
    • KOBIL Smart Key

    It also receives the first patent ever related to digital signatures.

  4. As the first class 3 smart card terminal in Germany, the KOBIL KAAN Professional receives a ZKA (Central Credit Committee) certification. The KOBIL KAAN Professional 2003 e-banking department also begins its operations.

  5. KOBIL receives DIN EN ISO 9001 certification for organizational quality.

    Elsewhere, our e-banking department launches and KOBIL moves to a new company headquarters officially opened by the prime minister of Rhineland-Palatinate Kurt Beck.

    Finally, KOBIL IDentity is launched. It is the world's first installation-free smart card terminal for mobile business and banking applications.

  6. KOBIL founder Ismet Koyun receives an award for innovative management from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rhenish Hesse.

    DATEV starts marketing IDentity as a strong authentication device for lawyers and tax consultants.

    It also receives the first patent ever related to digital signatures.

  7. The European Multimedia Forum awards KOBIL with the platinum European Seal of E-Excellence.

    Société Générale in France starts implementing IDentity, SwissSign relies on innovative KOBIL IDentity technology, and Savingsbank Sparkasse Worms-Alzey-Ried becomes one of the first to roll out KOBIL's chipTAN device.

    Valiant Bank and Hypothekarbank Lenzburg become the latest Swiss bank to use KOBIL's IDentity solution for secure authentication in e-banking.

  8. KOBIL introduces of application security technology (AST) and receives its first international awards.

  9. KOBIL's management is expanded to reflect its new international strategy, while our product portfolio continues to grow from AST to IDentity.

  10. Work begins on our secure communication platform, including Trusted Messenger, Signature and mBusiness:

    • SoChat: compliant, confidential and encrypted messaging
    • Sign: e-signature technology to sign anything, without lifting a pen
    • Business: the most effective way to build, test and deploy business process flows

  11. KOBIL develops signPod, the world's first online transaction verification device with a m2m eSim card for worldwide internet connectivity. It combines the strongest UX with the highest security transaction verification hardware on the market.

  12. After years of development to ensure the highest possible security, KOBIL releases IDentity, the cloud platform that enables companies to build their own super app.

  13. Istanbul with 16 million inhabitants has chosen KOBIL for the digital transformation. With 𝐊𝐎𝐁𝐈𝐋's technology, 𝐈𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐛𝐮𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝐈𝐌𝐌) launched Turkey's first super app, which will be an inspirational example for other major cities around the World.

  14. KOBIL established its US base in San Francisco, bringing its digital identity and SuperApp platform infrastructure to the North American market. The office marks KOBIL's commitment to serving enterprises, financial institutions, and technology partners across the region.

  15. Recognized byGartneras Sample Vendor

    The German technology company was recognized for its cutting-edge SuperApp framework. KOBIL stands out from its competitors in this list as the only technology provider company dedicated to secure digital identity and all-in-one multi-sided platform technologies.

    KOBIL myCity launched in Worms in 2024, making it Germany's first city SuperApp — giving citizens access to digital administrative services, payments, and community features through a single verified platform. The launch marked the first step in a broader national ambition: bringing Germany's cities into the digital age under one unified platform infrastructure.

    KOBIL founder and CEO İsmet Koyun, whose company provides cybersecurity services to the German Bundestag, is set to meet with Chancellor Scholz to advance the nationwide rollout of the SuperApp model.

    In 2025, KOBIL expanded its platform with the launch of KOBIL AI Trust — a governance layer that gives every AI agent a verifiable identity, enforces fine-grained authorization at runtime, and produces continuous audit evidence.

    As AI agents move into production across regulated industries, AI Trust addresses what traditional IAM was never designed for: autonomous, non-human identities operating at machine speed.

    In 2026, KOBIL launched mPower — a platform that carries a workforce's verified identity through every enterprise process.     Professor Emeritus of TU Darmstadt

    Is a worldwide-known computer scientist and mathematician. He is one of the founders of post-quantum cryptography, one of the big challenges in modern cryptography. In 1993, he received the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation, the most prestigious German scientific award. Subsequently, he received several other honours for his work in number theory, cryptography, and IT security. He is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the German Academy of Technical Sciences Acatech.

    Is a computer scientist and head of the System Security Lab in TU Darmstadt. He is a "fighter" for privacy protecting cryptographic systems, leading several international research and development projects on design and implementation of trustworthy computing platforms, security hardware, and cryptographic privacy-protection. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize. He has also been honored with several other awards.
